The SUNY Oneonta men's cross country team improved one spot today, as they finished third overall at the 2014 SUNYAC championship meet hosted by Brockport. Last year the men finished fourth overall when they hosted the meet out at Fortin Park. The third place finish equaled its best team standing from 2007 and 2012.
Â
The SUNY Geneseo men edged out SUNY Cortland for the team title with 51 points to Cortland's 58. Oneonta scored 84 points for its place finish ahead of Fredonia in fourth, as they scored 112 points.
Â
Leading the Red Dragons today were a pair of sophomores, as
Anthony Lupia (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) and
Jean-Paul Scott (Rochester/Fairport) turned in top-15 performances on the day. Lupia finished seventh overall with a time of 25:50.1 while Scott finished 11
th with a time of 26:01.6. Both runners earned All-Conference honors for their top-15 finishes. Lupia earned second team honors while Scott earned third team.
Â
"Anthony and Jean-Paul put themselves with the front group early," said head coach
Angelo Posillico. "They ran well as a result and kept our team in the race despite some of our other guys struggling. It was nice to see two sophomores take a leadership role today and not be afraid to run with the top guys in the conference. If we can get our seniors on the same page in two weeks we'll still have a shot to put together a nice run at regionals and contend for an NCAA berth."
Â
Rounding out Oneonta's top-7 today was seniors
Charles Remillard (Peru/Peru) and
David Bohunicky (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell), juniors
Mike Didas (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) and
Dominick Costanzo (Bohemia/Bohemia) and sophomore
David Busby (New Paltz/New Paltz).
Â
Remillard, Busby and Didas were Oneonta's 3
rd, 4
th and 5
th finishers in 21
st, 22
nd and 23
rd place respectively overall. Bohunicky was 25
th overall while Costanzo finished 28
th overall.
Â
The men will have two weeks to prepare for the NCAA Atlantic Region championship meet hosted by the University of Rochester on Saturday, Nov. 15.
