Wrestling Hosts North East Duals

Red Dragons Fall to Rhode Island College

The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team hosted the 2014 North East Duals Saturday afternoon. The Red and White fell to Rhode Island College 20-16 in its only dual match of the day.

Sophomore Dominic DeGraba (Dallas, PA/Dallas) picked up the first win of the match at 125 pounds claiming a slim 3-2 decision over Brennen Liebel. Rookie Anthony Messina (Farmingville/Sachem East) picked up where DeGraba left off taking a 7-4 decision over Damen Patisaul to give the Red Dragons a 6-0 lead.

Rhode Island claimed the 141 and 149 bouts to take an 8-6 advantage before junior Evan Wallace (East Greenbush/Columbia) out lasted Kyle Lake for a 4-0 decision to put Oneonta back on top 9-8.

After Cameron Milliken (Albany/Albany Academy) fell in the 165 bout, junior captain Shaun Gillen (Bohemia/Connetquot) dominated Victor Zabalu in the 174 contest taking the bout 13-4.

Senior captain Chad Obzud (Cohoes/Lansingburgh)  defeated Iman Gholizadeh in the 197 bout leaving The Red and White trailing by one heading into the heavyweight contest.

Rookie James Bethel (Saugerties/Saugerties) held his own in the first period taking a 3-2 lead in the middle of the stanza before taking a tie into the middle frame. Bethel took down his opponent with 15 seconds left in the second period, before allowing his opponent to gain control and get a take down. The combatant took to the third period with Rhode Island's Terrance Jean-Jaques holding a 9-6 lead. The third period started with a roaring crowd encouraging the Red Dragon. Bethel started on top in the final period, but a stalling Jean-Jaques did not allow Bethel to take advantage.

Six Red Dragons picked up wins in exhibition action. Sophomore Nathaniel Armour (New Orleans, LA/Jesuit) and freshman Timothy Flower (Rotterdam/Schalmont) each picked up a pair of pins, while sophomore Steven Lee (West Babylon/West Babylon) and junior Anthony Marino (Nesconset/Sachem North) recorded on pin apiece. Freshmen Chris D'Amico (Greenlawn/John H. Glenn) and Matthew Marino also picked up decisions.
