The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team placed 5
th out of 19 teams with a team score of 72.5 points at the NCAA Northeast Regionals at Roger Williams. The Red Dragons had two grapplers finish in the top three, and four wrestlers named to the All-Region team.
Leading the way for the Red Dragons was junior
James Bethel (Saugerties/Saugerties) who took the top title, winning the championship at 285 lbs. Bethel entered the regional as the top seed with a 39-2 record. Bethel opened competition yesterday with a pin against Lucien Cascino of Trinity. Â His final three wins were all by decision including a 6-1 win against Jake O'Brien of Ithaca. Â Bethel's victory qualified him for the NCAA Division III Championships and a slot on the All-Region team. Â
Classmate
Austin Sisco (Denville, NJ/Pope John Regional) placed 3
rd in the 133 lbs. class, completing the regional with a 4-1 record. Sisco won his first two matches by fall and decision before he took his only loss of the two-day tournament against Cortland's No.2 seed Maverick Passaro. In the consolation bracket, he pinned Stephen Jendritz of WPI in 1:31. In the match for third place, he defeated Jason Jacobi by decision 6-4. Sisco joins Bethel in the advancing to the NCAA Division III Championships at Wisconsin-La Crosse on March 10
th and 11
th and earned a place on the All-Region team.
Senior
Richard Dennison (Port Jervis/Minisink Valley) finished in 5
th place with a 4-2 record earning him a spot on the All-Region team. Classmate
Evan Wallace (East Greenbush/Columbia) was 3-2 and earned All-Region honors at 165 lbs. after his 6th place finish.
