Gettysburg, PA.  The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team took down Gettysburg 24-18, in their first match of the New Year. With this victory the Red Dragons improved to 6-2 on the season, and Gettysburg drops to 3-2. For the Red Dragons, sophomore Kevin Knox (Stormville/Carmel) and senior James Bethel (Saugerties/Saugerties) both scored six points for the Red Dragons.

The Red Dragons opened up the match in a 6-0 hole, after dropping the 125 lbs. class via pin. A forfeit in the 133 lbs. class leveled the match at six, and a 7-2 decision victory at 141 lbs. by senior Austin Sisco (Denville, NJ/Pope John) gave the Red Dragons its first lead of the match 9-6. Gettysburg bounced right back with a decision victory 5-0 at 149 lbs. to knot the match at 9-9.

With the Red Dragons trailing by six points 18-12 entering the 184 lbs. class, junior Lantze Lange (Smithtown/Smithtown West) beat his opponent by a means of a decision 6-2 to cut the lead in half 18-15. Junior Peter Pjetri (Suffern/Suffern) tied the match at 18, with a decision victory 10-4.

With the team match tied 18-18, the Red Dragons sent out senior James Bethel (Saugerties/Saugerties), currently ranked No. 4 to decide the fate of the match. Bethel came out strong against No.10 ranked Paul Triandafilou gaining a 3-0 in the first period with a take down and an escape. In the second period Bethel had a 5-0 advantage before taking Triandafilou to the mat for the pin to seal the victory for Oneonta.

The Red Dragons are back in action this weekend at the Will Abel Invitational at Ursinus on Saturday, January 13^th.
